My family has done a lot of traveling over the last week. We had tons of fun with family and made many happy memories. Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and that includes family road trips.
On our drive home we stopped at a hotel in Virginia that is conveniently located right off I-81. No one wants to drive way out of the way when on a long interstate trip, so location is key!
If I had to describe Homewood Suites by Hilton® in Christiansburg, Virginia with one word, I would choose the word spacious! It was so wonderful to arrive at the hotel at a reasonable hour so we could enjoy our large room and some of the other hotel amenities.
Check-in at Homewood Suites by Hilton® Christiansburg
The check-in attendant was super accommodating when I requested a crib. By the time we unloaded our overnight bags and returned to the lobby, she already had the playpen waiting in our room. She also gave directions to the elevator since our room was on the second floor. She gave me the times for breakfast and shared other information relevant to the check-in process.
Hilton® hotels have such beautifully decorated lobbies, and Homewood Suites Christiansburg is trendy with pretty stonework throughout. The fresh smell in the lobby and on the elevator was more than welcoming.
Room/Amenities at Homewood Suites by Hilton® Christiansburg
Our room was so roomy and included a fully functioning kitchen with dishware/utensils plus a full-sized refrigerator, dishwasher, stovetop, microwave, sink, and plenty of cabinet space. Dish soap and a dishwasher pod were even in the cabinet! And can you believe the hotel offers complimentary grocery shopping? Wow!
The hotel also provides free snacks Monday through Thursday. Our accommodations were over a weekend, so we missed out on this awesome feature, but what a treat for weekday travelers! A menu with food options for different days was posted on the refrigerator and it included Vietnamese and Italian options, nacho night, and salads. Yum!
The sitting area included a cozy couch and table/footrest. The lighting in the room was great with various lamps and overhead lighting…perfect for reading or working. The flat screen TV had an excellent picture with plenty of cartoons for the children. Cartoons were our fallback since the beautiful pool was unexpectedly closed.
We arrived in time to use the pool, and the kiddos were so excited; however, right before we got to the pool entrance, the check-in attendant graciously told us she had just closed the pool because someone became sick in the pool area. She said the pool area would have to be sanitized before use. Even though my children were extremely disappointed, I was so appreciative she let us know it was closed and also very thankful the hotel takes sanitation seriously! Accidents happen and they can’t be helped.
We went back to the room, put on our pajamas, and prepared the sofa bed for the kids. It pulled out into a large bed that was perfect for our two children, but our littlest one cried to sleep with mommy so she ended up enjoying the king bed. We didn’t use the playpen, but the room was plenty big to accommodate it along with the pullout sofa at the same time!
Our room was a king bed studio suite, and the mattress was so comfy. I felt relaxed the moment I propped up on the pillows! Ahh!!! The sheets were soft, clean, and the traditional hotel white. The headboard was modern and complimented the room nicely.
The lamps next to the bed have switches at the bottom for easy on/off access, and the added electrical plugs are fantastic convenience. No looking behind furniture for outlets!
Our room featured a very large closet with an iron and ironing board plus extra sheets, soft blankets, and pillows for the sofa bed.
The bathroom had more than adequate lighting for applying makeup and included complimentary toiletries. We had only three sets of towels in our room. I’m sure the front desk would have been more than happy to give us more, but we just worked with what we had available. The toilet and shower were in a separate area from the sink, so that’s a helpful feature for a family that may have multiple people dressing all at the same time.
One additional unique feature was the ceiling fan. I don’t ever remember staying in a hotel room with a fan, and I thought it was ingenious for creating an at-home atmosphere. The entire room was really like a mini apartment and would be comfortable for a month long visit or simply one night.
Other hotel conveniences included free Wi-Fi/printing, meeting rooms, a fitness center, a basketball court, patio/grilling areas, laundry, and a convenience store plus much more!
Complimentary Breakfast at Homewood Suites by Hilton® Christiansburg
The hotel was very quiet, and the rooms seemed pretty soundproof, so we all slept really well. After a peaceful sleep, we enjoyed our complimentary breakfast. We arrived in the breakfast area at 9:30 as the staff was promptly removing food and cleaning up. I totally forgot breakfast ended at 9:30, but we were still able to grab muffins and juice. A staff member even offered to make a take-out box of bacon, omelets, etc. but I told him we would just grab something quickly and go. He was very accommodating regarding our later arrival.
While the kids were eating breakfast I previewed some children’s books at the little store in the lobby. The books naturally caught my eye the night before during check-in, and the beautiful artwork captured my teacher’s heart. The logo for Homewood Suites is a duck, and they have creatively designed their own line of children’s books about Lewis the Duck. It’s fun to follow his adventures to different places as Homewood Suites by Hilton® comes alive in his stories. We purchased Lewis the Duck and His Long Trip and Lewis the Duck Cleans the World. These delightful stories helped pass the time of our car ride, and my children loved them!
Lewis the Duck Cleans the World tells the story of Homewood Suites’ partnership with Clean the World. The housekeepers collect leftover soap and shampoo bottles as they clean the rooms. Clean the World then purifies and recycles the leftover soap and donates it to needy countries around the world, lessening communicable disease. #homewoodsuitesgivesback
Before we left the hotel, we took time to return our keys and checkout. The attendant was very kind and took a picture of us. She wished us safe travels, and we were on our way!
