I have a lot of recipes that call for cream soups, but have you ever read the ingredients listed on cream soups sold at local grocery stores? They usually include MSG among other ingredients not preferred.
Locating and affording prepared foods with clean ingredients is not an easy task, so it’s often easier to create your own recipes with ingredients you actually want to eat.
Preparing cream soups is not difficult and you can make a batch of dry mix ahead of time that is available when needed for your favorite recipes. The next time a recipe calls for cream of chicken, celery, onion, or mushroom soup, you can make the recipe without that processed can of soup and feel good about eating real food ingredients!
Cream Soup Dry Ingredients:
2 cups non-fat dry milk
3/4 cup cornstarch
1 tablespooon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon thyme
Preparing and Storing the Dry Ingredients for Cream Soup:
Mix the above ingredients together and store in a glass jar or sealed container. Store in your pantry until ready to use, but don’t keep it too long! This will not be a problem if you make family recipes with cream soups regularly.
Preparing the Cream Soup: Replace Canned Soup with Clean Ingredient Cream Soup
When you need a can of cream of chicken, celery, onion, or mushroom soup for your next recipe, follow these steps. This recipe makes soup equivalent to one can of store-bought soup.
Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan on the stove.
Add 1/2 cup of celery, onions, or mushrooms depending on the type of cream soup you need. If you are making cream of chicken soup, skip this step.
Combine 1/3 cup of the dry mix with 1 1/4 cups of chicken broth. Add to the buttered vegetables and cook on the stove until the mixture thickens. Stir continuously.
