This fall post has been a long time in the making! I meant to post it much earlier in the season, but time got away from me. Better late than never!
My family spent the weekend decorating for Christmas, and even though Thanksgiving is greatly celebrated in our home, we have zoomed past fall in the décor department!
So many of the ideas in this post apply not only to making a cozy home for fall, but also to making a cozy home for Christmas! I hope you can take away a few pointers to create a cozy minimalist home this fall AND winter!
Highlight focal points in the room.
A fireplace, entertainment center, or tiered tray is a perfect place for creating a cozy minimalist space for fall. It’s not practical to decorate every space of your home, and a minimalist certainly wants the cozy without the clutter. We have a wood stove and mantel that I like to decorate seasonally. It’s the focal point of our tiny kitchen!
Assign a color scheme to each room.
Think about the color scheme of your room and try to make the seasonal colors blend in. My living room has browns, touches of red, greens, and neutral colors, so I used traditional fall décor this season.
On the other hand, my kitchen has a blush pink rug. It’s a definite focal point, so I decorated the woodstove/mantel area with blush pink pumpkins, neutral pumpkins, and greenery. My fall décor fits with the color scheme, and I love it so much better than when I used traditional fall colors in that space.
Purchase only décor you love.
If you purchase things randomly and don’t really consider the purchase, you will end up with a hodgepodge of fall décor that you can’t use! I like to repurpose décor and move it around from room to room. If you are a minimalist decorator, you don’t have an abundance of décor to choose from, so moving what you have to different locations keeps décor fresh. I like a cozy feel, but space is better.
Decorate with a pretty banner.
This year I purchased a fall banner for my living room. It adds a playful feel to the living room with the perfect amount of color. Pea Pods Boutique has the most adorable little banners, so be sure to check out Kelly’s page on Etsy.
Display pumpkins of different sizes and textures.
I like faux pumpkins for inside décor and real pumpkins outside. We visited a pumpkin patch several weeks ago and picked up some mini pumpkins. My outdoor décor is a little scarce this year, but that’s okay since I have now already decorated for Christmas mid-November! I loved white and cream-colored pumpkins for the indoors this season!
Diffuse essential oils, burn candles, or turn on flameless candles.
I don’t burn candles often. I mostly stick to diffusing because I feel it is just a lot healthier for my family. For a long while, I didn’t burn candles at all, but occasionally I will light a real one that is made of safer ingredients. We have so many options these days with flameless candles that a battery-operated flameless candle and a diffuser create almost the same ambiance as a traditional burning candle!
Brighten the room with cotton décor.
Cotton décor is fun throughout the year, but it is especially cozy in the fall. Last year, I even added some cotton décor to my Christmas tree!
Toss clutter and old décor.
My favorite motto is, “If you’re not using it, why keep it?”. Fall is the perfect time of year to clean out the closets, cabinets, and bedrooms. Your home will feel so much cozier when it is free of clutter and junk that is no longer useful to you.

Set out fresh flowers in the kitchen.
Fresh flowers have a way of creating a bright spot in the kitchen. Choose colors that will highlight the fall décor in your kitchen and don’t forget to keep them watered! Changing the water in fresh flowers usually helps them last a few more days!
Bake muffins, breads, and other fall treats.
You can never go wrong with baking in the fall! My husband and I are on a “less sugar” kick, so I haven’t done much baking this fall, but here are some of my favorite recipes! Enjoy!

Listen to music.
I love music! Music has been part of my family for as long as I can remember. I enjoy playing my own music, but I love listening to music even more! It’s the middle of November, and we are already listening to Christmas music regularly! Late fall is the best time to break out those Christmas carols and tunes!
Create ambiance by opening the blinds or turning on a lamp.
Fall brings sunny skies, but it also brings gloom and cloudy days. I love opening the blinds every day, but letting light inside is especially important on those cloudy days. Lamps just give me all the fall vibes on a darker fall day!
Best wishes creating a cozy minimalist home for fall!
